All of Silicon Valley is abuzz about the demise of a rising star in the “sharing economy,” but one technology driven service based businessman saw it coming 24 months ago.

When venture-backed Silicon Valley startup Homejoy announced last week that it would be discontinuing all operations effective July 31, 2015 – in spite of nearly $40 million of total capital raised – the tech press went crazy.

“It might be time for the (on-demand) market to consolidate,” said Buzzfeed’s Caroline O’Donovan. “GIG-BASED BUSINESSES WATCH IN FEAR” screamed the headline in Wall Street Hedge. And early VC funder Samir Shah felt compelled to add, “There’s a lot of blood in the water.”

Meanwhile, 3,000 miles away just outside of Washington DC, one tech savvy service innovator, Shawn Kaplan, COO of GreenMaidworks.com, was not the least bit surprised.

“I knew this might happen when I first read about Homejoy’s business model two years ago,” stated Mr. Kaplan. “Green Maidworks, is the East Coast’s first ‘on-demand’ eco-friendly residential maid service. Having serviced more than 1 million homes we know what works and what doesn’t work in this growing industry.”

No matter how much venture capital Homejoy raised, the lawsuits filed against them in this area prove they were not immune from that definition.”

Performance in Q1 2016; EBITDA up 11% Y-o-Y

Mumbai – July 31, 2015 – 3i Infotech Limited, a global provider of IT solutions and one of India’s mid-tier software product companies, today announced its operating results for the first quarter ended June 30, 2015.

 

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

  • Operating profit of Q1 2016 expanded to INR 30.39 cr from INR 27.31 crores and INR 63.16 crores QoQ.
  • Loss at a consolidated level however reduced to INR 74.02 crores from loss of INR 102.72 crores YoY and loss of INR 396.08 crores QoQ. 

Consolidated results for the quarter ended June 30, 2015 

  • Revenue from operations for the quarter is INR 274.59 crores as against INR 363.58 crores for the corresponding period of the previous year and INR 305.31 crores in the immediately preceding quarter. The revenue for Q1-FY2015 includes revenue of two of the Company’s subsidiaries, which were divested during Q2 and Q3 of last year.
  • Profit before interest, depreciation, tax and exceptional items is INR 23.49 crores as compared to INR 27.87 crores in the corresponding quarter of the previous year and INR 88.27 crores in the immediately preceding quarter.

The revenue for Q1-FY2015 includes revenue of two of the Company’s subsidiaries, which were divested during Q2 and Q3 of last year.

  • Loss after tax for the quarter stands at INR 74.02 crores, after interest INR 48.94 crores, Depreciation INR 49.40 crs, Tax INR (0.38) crores. This is against a loss of INR 102.72 crores YoY and a loss of INR 396.08 crores QoQ.

 

Over the last five quarters the operations of the company have stabilized sufficiently to demonstrate consistent operating results which the Board believes is sustainable, based on the fact that company continues to acquire customers and retains the support of its existing customers. The company, however, continues to be adversely impacted by the high debt burden. This stands at INR 2,400 crores. The Board of Directors has advised the management to work with the lenders on restructuring / realigning the debt with a view to sustain long term viability of the Company.

This is to inform that Ms. Sarojini Dikhale has been appointed as an Additional Director on the Board of the Company with immediate effect i.e. July 28, 2015. With her qualification and immense experience in the BFSI sector, her presence on the Board would benefit the Company immensely and would at the same time provide the much needed diversity.

Kevin Harrington Discusses New Book in Recent Interview

In a recent interview, Kevin Herrington of “Shark Tank” discussed his new book, Key Person of Influence: The Five-Step Method to Become One of the Most Highly Valued and Highly Paid People in Your Industry.

Kevin Harrington is well-known for his appearances on ABC’s hit show Shark Tank, but before he made offers to buy businesses on television, he was busy building dozens of companies of his own.  He is credited with the invention of the “infomercial” and was a key creator of the “As Seen on TV” channel, with over $4 billion in sales of products as a result.  He has been called “the embodiment of business innovation,” with dozens of original ideas and processes to his credit.  Recently, in an interview on Business Innovators Radio, Harrington discussed his new book, Key Person of Influence:  The Five-Step Method to Become One of the Most Highly Valued and Highly Paid People in Your Industry, and what inspired him to write it.

“While it is exciting for entrepreneurs to build a business from scratch, what they need to stay in business is sales,” notes Harrington.  “My system allows them to establish prominence in any market and ultimately boost sales by five or tenfold through the power of scalability.”

Further, Harrington says that becoming a “key person of influence” is not an option for the successful entrepreneur.  “There are dozens of people out there who can do what you do.  You have to establish yourself as a key person in your field,” he notes. “How do you become a key person in your industry?  I have established five steps that, if you follow, you will become a key person who influences your business and your industry.”

According to Harrington, it is very important to have a concise, “perfect” pitch to promote yourself.  “When I got an interview to be on ‘Shark Tank,’ I prepared a pitch that explained my strengths and what I could bring to the table,” he notes.  “You must always know your perfect pitch if you want to become a key person of influence, because you never know when you will have to give it.”

Other principles Harrington discusses in his book include seeking the help of mentor entrepreneurs to help new business owners overcome the issues related to business start-ups; raising individual profiles by appearing in as many locations as possible to discuss industry issues; change to a global mindset rather than a local one; and partner with someone who can bring new skills or ideas to the table.

What Local Business Owners Don’t Know That Could Be Crippling Their Business

Recent research shows a minority of small businesses see online marketing as an effective way to bring in new business. This education gap could be hurting a majority of local businesses. A recent interview with marketing author Tavis Bucklin sheds light on the subject and offers help.

Because of the efforts Google has made to help local businesses gain visibility in their search results, marketing experts claim it has never been easier for small businesses to leverage the internet to bring customer through their doors. However, a majority of local small businesses may not realize the true potential of online marketing.

In recent research conducted by ironmonreyDirect, 10,000 trades people were asked to take part in a study examining the marketing habits of trades people.

It was found that not only was digital marketing used by only a minority of small businesses, but few looked at online marketing as an effective way to bring in new business.

Out of the businesses surveyed 28% had a website, while only 7% used search engine optimization or pay per click methods to gain prospects.

The study also found Facebook was used by 16% of businesses, but only 11% of those believed it contributed to bringing in new business.

Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director at IronmongeryDirect, said, “Not enough is being done to help the small businesses that form the backbone of our economy to understand how best to use these tools. This education is urgently needed to help bridge the gap between these companies and their more digitally aware challengers.”

His opinion is echoed by Tavis Bucklin who in a recent interview about his upcoming book The Next Practical Step – Online Marketing for your Offline Business said, “The number of small businesses who are taking advantage of online marketing is minimal. Eventually all local businesses will have to have a strong online presence in order to stay competitive. In the mean time, the ones who are taking advantage of online marketing now are growing rapidly while those left behind may have a long road ahead.”

It appears online marketing education for small businesses may be more important than most business owners realize. For some business owners, finding the time to learn new marketing strategies may be a challenge. For others, a fear of not having enough in their marketing budget to allocate to online marketing could be keeping them from getting started.

During the interview, Tavis Bucklin addressed these problems by saying, “I wrote the book specifically for educating the average local business owner. Small business owners do not have a lot of extra time, so a quick read they can get for the price of a couple of lattés leaves no excuses. It’s important for business owners to be able to make educate marketing decisions.”

Robinson officially launches his performing career at age 42

NYC resident will be performing a one-man musical at the United Solo Theatre Festival on Oct. 17.

It may not be glamorous, lucrative or even secure, but Garrett Robinson does lead a rather interesting life. He’s an author, a poet and a singer who believes in following his dream.

A New York City resident since 2011, Robinson is making his stage debut at the age of 42, performing a one-man musical at the United Solo Theatre Festival on Oct. 17. It’s an adaptation of his novel, Zoe

The production is called Letters to Zoey and is a semi-autobiographical account of a character named Weldon Keyes. “He jumps on a coal train and leaves his hometown,” says Robinson. “Weldon writes letters to his girlfriend Zoey, describing his adventures, coming to terms with himself and his relationship with her.

“It’s actually based on my own experience in 1992 when I jumped on a coal train in Irondale, Alabama and wandered around the country for a year. I learned a lot about myself and what I wanted to do with my life.”

Since 2012, Robinson has been marketing his books on the street, reading his novels and poetry to anyone who would listen.

“I have received some amazing responses,” he says. “Not only have people written numerous reviews for my books on Amazon and Goodreads, someone in France is translating my novella, Zoe, into French as she pursues her PhD. Also, I regularly receive heartwarming messages from all over the world on my social media sites.

“This musical will provide the means to share more of my love of literature with the public.” 

Robinson is looking for some financial help with his new off-Broadway production as he has laid out nearly $3,000 to participate in the festival. This money has covered registration, ads, costumes, a set and service fees.

“I came up with an idea of Sleeper when I was travelling to Peru,” says Lana Dey, CEO of a designer startup. “I was on a 10-hour flight, and I just couldn’t find any comfortable position for my head. So, I just tried to strap it to the chair so that I didn’t have to lean on my neighbors all the time. It worked, and when I finally got to the destination, I made first sketches. My friends and I made several copies and tested them on all our flights and bus trips. We were surprised that our simple invention really helped to achieve much better sleep.”

To test efficiency of Sleeper, the team fulfilled a research. It revealed that 92% of respondents noted that they found it easier to fall asleep when using Sleeper on long-distance trips; 72% noted better quality of sleep when using Sleeper; 64% reported less back pain; 59% said they felt less tired after long trips when using Sleeper.

“Most people find it difficult and uncomfortable to fall asleep during long-distance flights because of unstable head position,” says Igor Bondarenko, Chief Designer for Sleeper Inc.. “You fall asleep, and your head is most likely to appear on a shoulder of some stranger who happen to be your neighbor. Sleeper ensures stable head position and some good sound sleep, a salvation to all who admire travelling.”

2redWinery, makers of the award-winning Ziniphany© Zinfandel and #2red is 30% towards goal on Indiegogo with all proceeds supporting prostate cancer research through the Robert and Susan Hollander Foundation, an IRS approved 501c3 organization.  Campaign supporters, in exchange for their tax-deductible support, can secure wine from the 2015 vintage or from the award-winning wine library of 2redWinery.

Robert Hollander, the winemaker and principle of 2redWinery, started small-volume winemaking in 2007 to indulge a long-standing passion.  Passion changed to purpose in 2010 after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer at an incurable stage. Dr. Hollander, a highly-regarded clinician/teacher at the Gainesville VA Medical Center, affiliated with the University of Florida, then created the Robert and Susan Hollander Foundation to fund prostate cancer research.

“After that, it just made sense to fund the Foundation with my winemaking.  It gave my wine a dual purpose, not just to make a great wine I was proud of, but a wine that served a special purpose,” Hollander observed.  

In the two years the Foundation has been operational, unrestricted grants have been provided to researchers at MD Anderson Center and the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Hollander’s campaign goal is $35000 with all proceeds above production costs supporting prostate cancer research through the Foundation.  Contributions to the campaign are processed by FirstGiving and are tax deductible.  

Rewards for campaign supporters include wine from the upcoming 2015 vintage or wines from the award-winning library of 2redWinery.   “It’s a win-win-win-wine,” according to Hollander.
